Mana Base Guide: The Castle Cycle — Utility Lands Hiding in Your Basics' Colors

The Castles are colored lands with real abilities attached, entering untapped when you control a basic of their type. They reward decks that keep a healthy basic count — a quiet argument against cutting every basic for nonbasic fixing. Each Castle's ability maps to its color's plan: card draw in black, a team pump in red, extra mana in green, scrying in blue, and a token in white.

The lands, from their actual text

Castle Locthwain is a rare Land from Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate, mana cost — (lands have no mana cost). Its rules text reads: "This land enters tapped unless you control a Swamp. {T}: Add {B}. {1}{B}{B}, {T}: Draw a card, then you lose life equal to the number of cards in your hand." It is legal in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Commander. Castle Embereth is a rare Land from Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander, mana cost — (lands have no mana cost). Its rules text reads: "This land enters tapped unless you control a Mountain. {T}: Add {R}. {1}{R}{R}, {T}: Creatures you control get +1/+0 until end of turn." It is legal in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Commander. Castle Garenbrig is a rare Land from Throne of Eldraine, mana cost — (lands have no mana cost). Its rules text reads: "This land enters tapped unless you control a Forest. {T}: Add {G}. {2}{G}{G}, {T}: Add six {G}. Spend this mana only to cast creature spells or activate abilities of creatures." It is legal in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Commander. Castle Vantress is a rare Land from Duskmourn: House of Horror Commander, mana cost — (lands have no mana cost). Its rules text reads: "This land enters tapped unless you control an Island. {T}: Add {U}. {2}{U}{U}, {T}: Scry 2." It is legal in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Commander. Castle Ardenvale is a rare Land from Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander, mana cost — (lands have no mana cost). Its rules text reads: "This land enters tapped unless you control a Plains. {T}: Add {W}. {2}{W}{W}, {T}: Create a 1/1 white Human creature token." It is legal in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Commander.

Putting it into practice

Build your mana base as a system, not a pile: count colored sources per color (a common target is 14+ sources for a color you need early), count total lands against your curve, and goldfish opening hands until the base proves it can cast your spells on schedule. MTGBrew's AI deck builder shows the color breakdown of any list you build, and the MTGBrew card database carries the exact text of every land in this guide.

Where to go next

Check the exact wording of every card mentioned here in the MTGBrew card database before you buy or slot anything — oracle text is the final word. Then brew the list in MTGBrew's AI deck builder, which respects your budget as a hard cap and explains how the deck's strength is measured against that budget.
