Mana Base Guide: Five-Color Mana Bases — Making Any Color Without Falling Apart

Five-color bases fail in a predictable way: plenty of colors in theory, the wrong two colors in the opening hand in practice. The fix is redundancy in the any-color lands above, basics weighted toward the colors your early spells need (usually green, for ramp and fixing), and the honesty to mulligan hands that cannot cast anything. Test your base by drawing twenty sample hands in the builder before you sleeve the deck.

Putting it into practice

Build your mana base as a system, not a pile: count colored sources per color (a common target is 14+ sources for a color you need early), count total lands against your curve, and goldfish opening hands until the base proves it can cast your spells on schedule.
