Tymna the Weaver vs Thrasios, Triton Hero: Partner Commanders Compared
Two partner commanders from Commander 2016, compared on their actual designs. Tymna the Weaver ({1}{W}{B}, Legendary Creature — Human Cleric) rewards attacking: her postcombat trigger lets you pay life equal to the number of opponents dealt combat damage and draw that many cards. Thrasios, Triton Hero ({G}{U}, Legendary Creature — Merfolk Wizard) rewards mana: his four-mana activated ability scries, then turns the top card of your library into either a land drop or a draw. Both carry partner, and both are legal in Legacy and Commander — full text of each is in the MTGBrew card database.
Two partners, two engines
Partner commanders are compared less by power than by what they reward. Tymna's engine runs on combat you were already making, which pushes her decks toward cheap evasive creatures and a low curve. Thrasios's engine runs on spare mana, which pushes his decks toward ramp and patience. The verdict by deck type: aggressive and midrange tables favor Tymna's engine; combo and control tables favor Thrasios, because an instant-speed mana sink in the command zone is a plan all by itself. Together they are the most famous partner pair in the format — each covering the other's weakness. Build both versions in MTGBrew's AI deck builder and goldfish the first four turns; the right partner for your meta announces itself quickly.
Budget-alternatives note
Partners are a system, not a single card: a budget build keeps the partner whose engine the deck actually uses every game and replaces the other with a commander that merely shares colors. The deck loses flexibility, not its core plan.
One final test when you are torn between the two: ask which card you would rather draw on turn ten with an empty hand. The partner that answers that question is the engine your deck leans on — build the mana, the curve, and the protection package around that answer, and let the other partner play support.
